It's great that Garfield received this beautiful upgrade. Hopefully these facilities will be accessible to all students enrolled, not just the APP or only after the APP kids are finished.

Last year the new Cleveland High School opened, yet the school district made no improvements to staff or curriculum. In the P-I articles about teen gangs a month ago, it sounds like gang members are allowed to stroll the halls with impunity during class time. The front entrance is now locked due to gunfire as students arrived. Given its location next to the freeway, Cleveland was a prime candidate for programs accessible to students all over the district. Or starting fresh, the school could have provided a new focus and environment for students from the nearby neighborhoods. The new superintendant has added a few services(and to Rainier Beach) but there's resistance from North End board members and parents.

There is no excuse for a city as prosperous and (over)educated as Seattle to throw away a brand new building. Or allow Cleveland, Rainier Beach, Franklin, and Sealth to languish half enrolled while other high schools are stacked with portables. Its shameful! Make our SouthEnd schools safe with real academic programs for all students!

We can only hope the District will eventually disperse the APP kids to their neighborhood schools. Maybe then all the kids of Seattle will get such fine treatment. I am glad for those students who live near Garfield though.

It truly is an incredible facility, and I am glad the residents of the Central District will get to benefit from it. However, I don't know if the facility would have been so spectacular if it were not also the home of the District's Advanced Placement Program students.
