I am very relieved to hear that Elisabeth will not give a TV interview. I would like to think that she has good people around her, looking after her best interest, and that of her children. I would be extremely concerned if that wasn’t the case, and she did a TV appearance simply for the money.
They are innocent victims of a horrible crime, they did not ask for this to happen to them, and they certainly deserve better than the world knowing what they look like, so the media circus can continue to follow them for the rest of their lives.
Whenever there’s a big story, the public becomes hungry for pictures, and in satisfying that demand, the media knows no decency because there’s money to be made.
I sounds to me that what they need is to be left in peace. I hope they are able to sue that evil man out of every cent he owns, and if not, the Austrian Govt needs to step up and look after them, as it was their legal system who failed Elisabeth so miserably all those year ago. Elisabeth, I wish for you the freedom you deserve, the freedom you’ve been denied for so long.
Yes, I Would Halfway Agree With You. I Understand The Importance Of Protecting Their Identities. I Wouldn’t Want The Media Harassing This Family Not For A Second Of Their Life. And That They May Live It In Peace And Freedom. Yet, At The Same Time It Is Not Just Pictures The Public Craves For. It Is A Face To Picture In Your Prayers.
Although I Can Pray W/Out. It Is Not Just A “Big Story” This Story You Read About, Sticks With You, Almost Haunts You Knowing Such An Event Existed.

I personally don’t understand the public’s need to see a picture of Elisabeth or the children. I believe that Elisabeth might do an interview at some point in the future, as you said Chandra, maybe not so much for financial gain, but for her to be able to tell her story first-hand. However, she needs a chance to heal first, after all the poor woman has been through YEARS of torment, I’m sure the last thing she feels like doing is posing for photos, or showing her face in front of a worldwide TV audience…
Furthermore (and sorry if I’m getting carried away) I honestly don’t believe that it would be beneficial for Elisabeth to talk about her story in public, she has already been provided with a safe outlet for her to express her feelings …in therapy.
How would it be helpful for her to tell the whole world every gory detail of what she suffered during those 24 years in the cellar? We probably already know more than we have to as it is.
The truth is that it is human nature to be curious and we’re just as repulsed as we are fascinated by this story. As much as I’d like to, one day, hear or read the story from Elisabeth herself, I realize that it’s for my own reasons: It would provide ME with proof that she’s ok and it would help ME to have closure, but how does this actually help her?
I agree with everything you’re saying. I don’t want to see her or her children on television; isn’t anything sacred in the world anymore? Can we just leave the woman alone?
That said, I’m not sure what to beleive about the family’s recovery, not sure what to believe about Austrian culture, not sure if she is getting the best care. There are so many unknowns that I can get obsessed with.
I know that there are people in the world that hate Oprah Winfrey, but this is an Oprah call; someone has to get inside this situation, not to expose Elisabeth to the media or anything like that, but to give all the rest of us some solid answers.

Yikes. Strongly worded Ben, but I agree totally. There are many people whom I pray for that I don’t have a face to put to those prayers. Sometimes it is an unborm child, or a friend of a friend of a friend.
It’s Burhma or China or New Orleans, or wherever natural disaster has struck.
We don’t need her face, or the face of her children, to pray better or harder, or to answer any selfish questions we may have.
It’s curiosity, nothing more.
I’m sure even the concept of going on TV and knowing the world is going to see you is overwhelming at best.

I agree strongly that Elisabeth should be left alone and that we don’t need to see her on TV, but I think Chandra’s message was well intentioned, why be so harsh on her?
I agree with everyone and especially Jen in that the woman should be left alone (by the press). And if she ever gives that interview I hope for her own sake she covers her face and distorts her voice. Like Jen I have considered and doubted my own sincerity, obsessed as I am with this story. It would relieve some of this obsession no doubt to hear Elisabeth speak for herself, but I don’t need or even want to see her face. And if telling the story (even when disguised) doesn’t help HER in any way, I would rather she didn’t. One thing though is for certain, she must be a remarkably strong woman to have survived this, no matter what state she is in. Maybe that’s one of the things that obsesses me most.
All I want is that Josef gets tortured brutally and Elisabeth and her kids are well looked after by the Austrian Govt. who are partly to be blamed for buying Josef’s stories for a period of 24 years. How daft can the so called authorieis be?
I initially agreed with Chandra but after reading the other posts, realised this is selfish, to see Elisabeth’s face just to satisfy my own curiousity. That said however this case has truly haunted me, just to know that a situation like this even existed and I would cherish the chance to hear her side of the story and to know and see how she is doing. I awake thinking about her situation, dream about it, it distracts me from my working day and I wonder how many other people are feeling like this? I think Jen has touched upon the crux of why this is, it is the sheer strength of the woman to carry on and cope with what she was going through. If the rumours are to be believed that she allowed herself to be raped just so that her children would not starve then I can understand why, for the love of her children, she did not commit suicide in that hell hole of a place and the only home she knew for 24 years. She must be a truly wonderful mother and I would even go so far as to say a saint. Imagining giving birth to so many children without, I assume, pain relief or medical care. Elisabeth and her children will surely one day go to heaven because they have already been to hell. God bless all of them!!

Yes, I Am Curious About This Womens Story. I Am “Heart” Touched By It. Night And Day It Is July 21, 2008….Months Later, And I Am Still Stuck Thinking And Praying For This Family.

What Business Is It Of Mine????? It Is The Worlds Business To Know That These Things Happen, And That We Should Open Our Eyes And Do Something About It To Make Things Right. It Is Our Business To Know That The Austria Authorities Failed Her. And If The Authorities/Government Fail Again To Help Her After Their Hospitalization, It Is Our Business To Work Together And Help Her. Unless She Declines Otherwise.
