Yeah that’s right, I said it; what is the big kerfuffle over the lunch menu at NBC studios?
If you’re not familiar with this story; NBC Studio’s Cafeteria boasted a special lunch menu the other day “in honor of Black History Month”.
Word got out when ?estlove of the Roots tweeted a picture of the menu- and it was on from there.
The Huffington Post called it a “Shock”. Commentators were falling over each other to express their outrage at the racial stereotype being pushed by NBC- or at least their Cafeteria.
Here’s my thing- I don’t understand the outrage at all. It’s a cafeteria- they serve food. In honor of Black History Month, they served traditional Black food.
Oh, you didn’t know that fried chicken and greens are traditional?
Get off it. Of course it is. Just like Red Beans and Rice, Peach Cobbler and a laundry list of other finger-licking-good foods.
Is it a “stereotype” to offer those foods? Is it culturally insensitive? Is it racist? No, no, no.
On the real- people need to chill out! Talk about making a mountain out of a mole-hill. I wish I had a soul food lunch this week, shoooo… and you do to, admit it. You want that dry ass low fat turkey on wheat, or some greens, fried chicken, smoked turkey, beans and rice and corn bread?
You don’t have to be Black to make the better choice here, you just have to have tastebuds that appreciate food.
The question of whether or not the Cafeteria is respectfully honoring Black History (eff the month, I’on’t like it) is irrelevant.
A bigger question is “what is the Network doing to honor Black History?” Does that matter? Should they be doing a tv special, or should they run a series of “Black” movies over the 28 days? Isn’t that the power in a television network?
And where the hell was the peach cobbler?
