Mr. Donaldson, Please Go Home

**sigh**

We posted something a few weeks ago that basically let the readers know, we’re not feeling Donaldson for mayor.  We made some overtly dramatic comments about him not being Mayor because he’s “the black guy”.

Let’s just say for the sake of clarification that we have no doubt that a black man could be Mayor of Seattle ( hi Norm!)…but it’s not this black guy.

As with most people seeking a first term in elected office, there really isn’t much on Donaldson’s resume that qualifies him for the job.  He has been unimpressive at best.  Though he is up in the poles, we attribute that to nothing more than name recognition.  If he survives August 18th we’ll be shocked and disturbed.

As it stands, it is perhaps only ego and stubborness that keeps this dude in the race.  He has no real money or backing.  He has no weighty endorsements to speak of (though, endorsements are tricky little buggers).  He doesn’t appear to be in the race.  He’s just sort of over there, in his lane, walking around the track.

I am a firm beleiver that in any situation, when one does damage or delays progess, they should move the hell out of the way.

Donaldson should drop out of the Mayor’s race.  Like, today.  Right now.  We should wake up to the news that he’s out.  But we won’t.  Ballots have been printed and have started ariving in Seattle mailboxes.  All Donaldson has to do is stay on the track for a few more weeks and it’ll all be over.

Too bad he can’t just shut up while he’s still on the track.  Because he made a total and complete ass of himself today:

From the SeattlePI.com

Donaldson called a news conference because, his campaign said, the City of Seattle was going to force the Restaurante Michoacan in Ballard to remove a smiley face. “That the city of Seattle cannot distinguish between a professionally applied smiley-face and real graffiti indicates just how out of touch the bureaucracy is,” Donaldson said in a statement. “What is wrong with this city?”

A better question might be what’s wrong with Donaldson’s campaign? The city never told the restaurant to remove the smiley face and when the campaign found that out it cancelled the news conference, but still tried to spin le affair smiley face to its advantage.

“We believe that our planned press conference forced the city to resolve this problem,” Donaldson said in the cancellation notice.

Andy Ryan, spokesman for Seattle Public Utilities, said the restaurant in question had actual graffiti on the building.

“The city never told the restaurant to remove the smiley face, but rather the graffiti,” Ryan said. “We just want to make it clear that we never, at any time, told anyone they had to take a smiley face off their building.”

**rubbing temples**

Ummm…what the hell is that?!  An attempt to grab the support of small business in Seattle?  Can you say big fat fail?!

You didn’t have your facts right because you probably don’t have anyone to check facts for you.

This is sad people, just sad.

When you are desperate for media coverage, desperate for support, it’s time to fold up shop.

You’re quickly moving from “that dude who ran for mayor” to “that dude who ran for mayor and made an ass out of himself”.

Think it over.  The clock is ticking.

I think these moves are less Donaldson and more his consultant who, among other things, famously told members of the 37th LD that they had a chance to vote for another of her clients and they’d “better not f*** this up!”. Donaldson is a nice guy. Way out of his league and swayed by spectacularly bad advice, but a nice guy. His brochures have hand crossed out “for City Council”, replaced by “Mayor”. Perhaps he should have stuck with his original plan…

For me this very important race deserves to have race not be a factor. My own personal criteria is who understands Pres. Barack Obama’s mantra that, change begins locally. Joe Mallahan, clearly gets this. He worked side by side Obama volunteers and delegates at the neighborhood level for almost two years. He gets my endorsement and vote. I originally endorsed Donaldson but could not feel the love with his candidacy. I did not hold against him that he had never heard of Dawn Mason, no ego here. lol
