Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince: Movie 6 SUCKS

Okay, if you don’t know what happens in the 6th book of the Harry Potter series, then don’t read this post- I don’t want a ton of emails and comments lamenting how I ruined it for you.  If you’ve read the book- this is mostdef for you.

Most people seem to have loved the movie- which I saw opening night with the boychild.

I’m not one of those people.  The movie was great, right up until the last 20 minutes.  Then it went from awesome to sh*t.

I spent the entire movie waiting for the death eaters to penetrate Hogwarts via the Vanishing Cabinet.  If you’ve read the book, you know that once inside the castle, the death eaters and the students engage in an epic battle.  Every word oozed off the page- I ignored the phone, my growling tummy, the children and work just so I could read it a few times- that’s how awesome the battle inside Hogwarts was written- in the book.

In the movie?  No battle.  I sat for more than 2 hours, waiting…no battle.  It seems the screen writer and the director felt that the only significant aspect of the battle is the death of beloved Dumbledore.

They were wrong, and how the author let these fools leave out something so key is beyond me.  Will it take place in either of the last 2 movies- I don’t know the answer to that.  But to cheat the viewers out of such an important event was just that- a cheat.

Students come to Hogwarts this year, unsure if they even want to be there, having spent the entire summer listening to their parents freak out about the possible danger their children could face if the school was ever attacked, unsure if they wanted their children to attend at all.

The battle is that epic moment when the students truly cross over from children to young men and women- much more so than the battle inside the Ministry of Magic.  The battle which takes place in the book is like a ritual of sorts, the final test that determins who will stand up and fight- not for Harry, but for the future of magic altogether.

The death of Dumbledore would have been all the more shocking and heart wrenching if it had happened during the fight to protect Hogwarts.  As someone who has read all the books, NOT having the battle was distracting because I found myself wondering when it was going to jump off- it never did.  I read a 650 page book and waited a year for THIS shit?  Not happy.  Not happy at all.

It was so bothersome that I came home at 3 in the morning, found the book, and read the last 5 chapters again- just to make sure I wasn’t crazy and that there was a battle inside the school- there it was, every word in black and white.

Was it a good movie?  Sure.  It was a’ight.  But it totally missed the opportunity to be great.

Perhaps if you’ve never read the book, it won’t matter.  If you did read the book- catch a matinee.

I never read the book. I felt like this movie was building up to something big and then suddenly the end credits were rolling? Is the next movie going to pick up with a big battle? I’m going to have to read the book soon to get the real ending.

  2. Dave says:

I’m not the biggest Harry Potter fan but figured I give the movie a shot instead of waiting for it to come out on DVD. Well…..the movie sucked big time. I sat there waiting for some huge battle but instead received nothing but a bunch of teens trying to get in each others pants. They really screwed this one up. Great job.

  3. nick says:

well you all said it for me. crap. complete crap. david yates sucks the big one….can we get peter jackson for the last 2, and a remake of the previous 6?

  4. Tahmid says:

im 14 and a huge HP fan and i really have to say that this movie was Avada Kedavra’d they left out so many important scenes and made the movie out to be more like a romantic comedy for real
i have to admit tht it was funny and tht made it entertaining but seriously this movie was like a defensless muggle in front of Voldemort and i cmpltly agree with all of ur cmmnts like the bill and fleur thing and the battle scene too i cud not believe it as i sat in the theatre watching it i cud not believce that JK wud let this happen and the actors must have read this book and i cnt believe they wud act for it but they prolly just wanted money nyway here is my review

ok first off seriously the battle was one of the most coolest parts of the book and i really dnt know y they burned the burrow i mean they still need it in the 7th one

also they missed very crucial parts of the book tht they need for the 7th also
for instance in the beginning dumbledore was suppose to tell of harry’s inheritance of sirius’ house and the houself kreacher because they need him in the 7th one and they also hide in sirius’ house

2nd of all the most crucial point of the book tht was missed was the memories seen in the pensieve i mean harry doesnt even kno wut the hell all the other horcruxes are so i really dnt know how they r gonna present that in the 7th movie

also they missed the annoncement of fleurs marriage to bill due to happen in the 7th one that is important too seeing as that is where harry, ron, and hermione leave from when the death eaters r about to come

also they nvr showed harry and ginny together at all or the big quddich match tht they one leading harry to kiss ginny in the afterparty

plus before dumbledore died he was suppose to paralyze harry under the invisibility cloak snape was not suppose to see him

some small things are stuff like how instead of tonks finding harry on the train in the beginning luna found him and also the scene with katie bell getting cursed was much too soon in the movie

my last dissapointment involves all the movies after the second one
i mean seriously where did the fun sport of quidditch go? they really shudve shown that more

also i really think that the movie centered more on ron and hermione’s love life instead of harry and the horcruxes and dumbledore who i cnt believe ddnt get a funeral like the book being the great wizard he was

all in all i think the director and writer for the movie were on drugs at the time of moviemaking the movie really just centered on the young wizard and witches growing up and experiencing the romance in their lives they made the heroes seem like wimps and it was insulting

and i think we can probably expect that the 7th movie will also tank seeing as they will need to change major things in it becuz of the events in the 6th movie like the burrow on fire and harry not seeing the rest of the memories and not knowing the other horcruxes
besides the 7th book has waayy too much stuff in it so i really dnt think that they will put in all of it nyway but every word in the 7th book is actually pretty crucial and important and if it misses parts then it really wnt be as good as the book
no movie is but this mite just be the worst atleast in the sense that it wnt match the book very much

all the movies were killed after the first 2 ut this was by far the worst personally i think i cudve directed it better
i love reading the HP books and i think they shud make a recall on this movie and make a new and improved one more like the book

if i grow to be as rich as JK Rowling herself then i wud personally go to her if she is stil lalive and with her i wud redo all the movies like they are suppose to be eventho u cnt have harry, ron, and hermione wwithout daniel, rupert, and emma but they will be to old so id find actors just as good and do the movies the right way

sryy for the lenghty review ;]

ps. david yates is like friggin Voldemort to these movies and he shud be fired! the 7th one better be awesome!! and they shud redo the sixth!!

  5. Yates destroyed HBP says:

the part when snape said, “I am the Half Blood Prince” then left off without explaining why he is called such was so hilarious yet insulting.. what the f*ck was that??
if I were a wizard, I’d definitely cast AVADA KEDAVRA on David Yates!

  6. Garfield_90 says:

ok seriously Davud needs to get it together.
this movie sucked major ass. I am soo grateful that i did not go to the movies to see this mess. Trust me people online movie websites are going to become your best friends. I was one of the lucky people who didnt manage to waste money on this load of garbage. Its so pathetic, i mean really. I was just disgusted from the beginning.
When the hell since Luna discovered Harry on the train instead of Tonks. I dont really know if im a die hard Harry Potter Fan, but i do read an enjoy the books. Now if i noticed something as insignificant as ” Luna’s discovery” then you know something is wrong.
Watching it online had the same effect as seeing it in the movies, and it sucked just the same. This is truly the worst Harry Potter film. Im just disgusted by the lack of the storyline portrayed in the book. WTF is going on. Was David Yates high or something.
omg i totally forgot about Bills and Fleurs wedding at the burrow. N it makes total sense why the hell would they add an unecessary scence and burn it down.
Omg the last part when Snape killed Dumbledore, wasnt Harry suppose to be frozen, and out of sight. Harry would have definatley done saomething if he wasnt immobilized.
I honestly almost fell asleep during this movie. I was literally dying from Lack of Action. The previous films werent as good as the books, but they were acceptable.
It is true when they say the Movies are getting worst. all i know is that the 7th movie better be the Best potter film. I mean Yates is splitting it into 2 parts. I think he at least owe us this.
This and Transformers 2 were suppose to be the best Summer Films, instead they proved to be HUGE dissapointments.
That said and done. All we can do is sit n wait for the 7th movie.

  7. The screenwriters and Yates sucks says:

I can’t believe it!! They really killed this book. the worst part is that, this would have been a really really really good movie. It was all laid out them! And what they did they do, they killed it a million times over! All i have are my books. But seriously, when is JK gonna step up and protect her brainchild.. JK WE NEED YOU!! Please stop this insult to your fabulous work!!

  8. Boyd Holmquist says:

    I couln’d agrre more!
I was looking forward to another great HP movie like the other 5 absolutely were, but when I watched the movie my dissapoinment could hardly have been any greater.
Left out important parts everywhere. Instead they put in things, JK Rowling never wrote. It wasn’t a romance, nore an action, or comedy movie there was just alittle bit of all of it, and most certainly not enough.
What happened to the whole romance between Ginny and Harry?
It was completely shortend and screwed up.
As far as I recall, the Weasley house was never blown up by Bellatrix Lestrange. WTF
Why there was no need for that.
MOst particular the left out battle at Hogwarst, to which I too was looking forward very much.

    As a Harry potter Fan.
    I’m disappointed.

  9. Boyd Holmquist says:

The thing, that freaks me out most is, that there is nothing we can do. The movie wont be redone!
All we can do is let david yates know, that he is a f*cking amature, who doesn’t seem to have read the books.
How could you do this to us!!!!
We should like all write angry letters to someone important, to let them know.
And then all the idiots, who come out of the cinema, with a wide stupid smile on their face and say:”wow what a great movie”….Hello did anybody actually read any of the books and sees, where Yates is going (straight to hell). How is Yates going to make the 7th Movie ?
Where is the Wedding going to be? at Grimmld Place? Or maybe in Dumbledores Office?
I’m surprised, If Fleur isn’t going to marry Dobby the Houself instead of Bill Weasley, that would propably be a funny little change in the story.
    Gosh!!!

Oh and by the way, if my english seems weird, its because I’m from Germany. Thats also why I joined this conversation so late.

  10. Schamschi says:

(warning, contains spoilers!!!) HP6 did suck very badly indeed, but enough people had said that already, so I won’t go on about that. I was just thinking that, weren’t it for the title of the 7th book, I wouldn’t be surprised if they cut out the Deathly Hallows completely, just like they virtually cut out the Half-Blood Prince out of HP6, for the only two parts they play in the book that are really indispensable and relevant to the main plot are, that, first, Dumbledore was blinded by the Resurrection Stone when he examined the ring of Marvolo Gaunt, and did therefore sustain his fatal injury, and second, that Voldemort cannot kill Harry with the Elder Wand because Harry is it’s master. And seeing as the makers of HP6 apparently didn’t give a damn how Dumbledore had got his hand injured, and, although being Dumbledore “has it’s privileges”, he doesn’t have a clue what Voldy’s Horcruxes could be (which makes the fact that he somehow managed to find Marvolo Gaunt’s Ring even more astounding), I wouldn’t be surprised if Voldemort simply dies of old age, Snape has never known Lily Evans and is still the bad boy in the end, and anyway, Harry has had his fill with the magical world an returns to Privet Drive to live with the Dursleys…

Seriously, I wonder how (or rather, I doubt that) they’ll be able to explain the hitherto unresolved questions in the 7th movie so that it will make any sense and still have got something to do with the books.

David Yates is the worst thing that has ever happened to the Harry Potter series. The first two weren’t that good either, and the forth installment was seriously crappy, but at least it was possible there to understand the plot, making the movies have something to do with the books.

  11. chris says:

I have read almost all the comments here so I am redundant please forgive me. HAS ANYONE NOTICED THAT THEY BURNED THE WEASLEY HOUSE IN PART 6? HOW THE HECK ARE THEY SUPPOSED TO HAVE A WEDDING AT THE HOUSE IN BOOK 7? DO THEY HAVE BURROW INSURANCE? GOOD GRIEF, DAVID YATES CAN FOLLOW THE 1ST DUMBLEDOR (HINT-DECEASED)

  12. Reece says:

The more I think and remember this movie, the madder I get. It has been over a month since I saw it, and I still want my money back. Yes, I do understand that not everyone can be pleased and that content sometimes has to be cut out, but come on. It is as if they did not even read the book. And to add such lame scenes as they did was inexcusable. So much of the character dialogue was left out or changed that it was ridiculous. I’m still asking myself why, why, why? This was a total money grab, and a slap and spit in the face of Harry Potter fans. Now that I think about it if you would have pleased the Harry Potter fans with this movie, you probably would have please everyone else too. Honestly, who was your target audience when you made this film? If this movie was half as good as the book, I would have seen it more than once. I would definitely have purchased the DVD when it came out. Instead, I’m here telling people not to waste their money. I’ve already told my family and friends not to see this piece of crap, and if they are going to see it. Wait until it comes on HBO or network TV. The commercials will be the highlight of their experience. Maybe, I’m being a bit harsh, but those of you that have seen the film, you know it to be the truth.

  13. Annoyed Fan says:

The last two HP movies (Order of the Phoenix and Half Blood Prince) have royally sucked!!!!! And the reason is David Yates. Warner Brothers please fire this guy. I am sure he is a nice person, yadda yadda, but his directing sucks and he is ruining this franchise. His directing lacks passion. Everything in the movie is so dry and washed out. The emotions are flat and often off-key in timing. I cried in when Dumbldore dies in the book and in the movie I felt nothing. The moment of his death was done without any cinematic style.
Not only that but the battle scene was taken out of the movie….
Now what the hell? Malfoy spends the entire movie trying to get the Cabinet to work so the Death Eaters can get into the castle….and for what? So that they can destroy the cafeteria? Because that is all they did in the movie…..destroy the freakin cafeteria and Hagrid’s house. The stupid ass director didn’t know what to do now that he had taken the battle at the end of the book out. So the Death Eaters had nothing to do at the end of the move but to go bomb up the cafeteria and Hagrid’s house. Brilliant.

  14. Elisabeth says:

I agree totally! I hated this movie. I love Harry Potter don’t get me wrong but I hate the path the movies have taken. In my opinion it is the director’s fault they need to can Yates and get Cuaron back please! I can only hope against hope that Warner Brothers open their eyes realize that man is butchering the Harry Potter legacy.

  15. John says:

I hated this movie. I didn’t think it was going to stink this bad but it did. I wonder if the director was eating shit when he read the book. I don’t mean to be so harsh but they left all the important parts in the book out. It seems like each and every HP movie gets worse and worse. I’m not watching the last two, no point of wasting my time or money.

  16. William says:

I agree with every statement said above, I have read every harry potter book three times now, and two of those three times were in this past year… Num. 1 was ok in comparison to the book. Num. 2 was my personal favorite movie i think it kept the flow of the book pretty well. Num. 3 was decent Num. 4 was sort of ok i guess… Num. 5 was completely butchered and needs to be redone badly except for the age factor of the lead cast members…. and now the dreaded Num. 6…. it was by far my biggest let down of the year. They completely cut out the bill and fleur scenes… i mean really they needed that for the set up of dobby’s death :( … they didn’t put in any of the scenes with any mention of creature, who was my personal favorite character, plus they need him for the next book to get the real locket so… and the final and most fatal flaw… the cut of the most beloved fight scene of book six… ok the only fight scene, but still, the movie needed it badly. the fact that the funeral sucked didn’t help any… So… if book five was butchered in the movie, then number six was cut into little bitty peices, shoved in a blender, turned on frappe, poured down a camels throught, craped out, re-blended, and sent to the beloved J.K. Rowling via air mail.

  17. Ari says:

I don’t agree. Sorry, but I read they only didn’t do it because they were during the battle in the 7th movie and they didn’t want to be repetitive.

  18. richie says:

How very true you are. There was one more thing that upset me more than that,in the book Dumbledore stops Harry from becoming involved with the fight, however in the movie it looks like Harry is a coward by hiding whilst Dumbledore is killed.

    • Ron says:

I agree with Richie. The film is not definitely up to fans expectations. It is a complete entertainment for ones who didn’t read the book and complete disappointment for ones who read the book.

  19. Cale says:

“OK, I know it’s about magic, and wizards, and elves, and something about ‘horcruxes’, but that’s all window-dressing. What the fans REALLY wanna see is who ends up with who!”

Seriously, it’s like 90210 with ‘magic.’ Stupid. Utterly stupid.

It’s like they -DID- read the book, but only made a movie with the lame parts. I think they sorta believe that only 13 year old girls actually read the series. That’s why they decided the ‘essential plot points’ were the exquisitely disturbing ‘Lavender’ character and Harry’s relationship issues.

Honestly, they kept the stupid romantic crap, but they cut out the battle scene? Are they TRYING to ruin the books?

  20. Richard Griffith says:

Worse than all the above…. the most touching and intimate scene in the entire series was CUT OUT COMPLETELY for what looked like some kind of “DREAM SEQUENCE” where the main characters acted like it actually happened!

I’m sorry, JKR, you really sold out to Hollywood on this one, I’ve bought every single DVD in this franchise, but the complete bollux of this film ended that. Unless this film is reshot and redone, I won’t buy another DVD of this series, and am seriously considering selling what I already have, I’m so completely disenchanted with it.

  21. weregrrl says:

ok…there were so many responses that I stopped reading halfway through(kind of like the Harry Potter team stopping halfway through each book^^) but – as soon as I saw the chick with the afro it was like….mind fuck…I was so distracted by everything just being so…wrong!
So we all admit the 1st movie cut out like, what, 2 scenes? acceptable. 2nd was alright. 3rd…WHERE DID THAT FIREBOLT COME FROM?(and why aren’t the Marauders’ hot? Well, Whoever plays Remus and Gary Oldman grew on me)!! disappointing. the rest have all left WTF WTF WTF just chanting in my head in an endless stream. Sure, crop some unimportant scenes, put your own twist on it WHERE NEEDED to make sense…don’t fucking rape the whole series to its core, tear the core into tiny little pieces, throw those pieces into a hat, and then randomly pick the ones to include. Creative license does not give you the right to make up some crapped up fanfiction. If I wanted that I could, oh my, GO ON FANFICTION! At least they keep the characters in character for the most part!
At this rate, the only thing that will halt the next movies’ descent to shame – not redeem them, but halt it – is to have Tonks and Remus’s marriage (I actually cried when they cut that. The relationship left didn’t make sense, even to me)at Tonks’ parents house in place of Bill and Fluer’s at the Burrow; have some sort of flashback scene or explanation from Harry about what the HELL he was talking to old Dumbles about when he wasn’t feeling up his best mate’s sister; Bill MAY be included just to see Fenir’s fury…or they could, once more, use Remus, since he’s playing let’s-all-kill-the-humans-cos-we’re-kinda-living-in-denial-that-we’re-humans-to with him for the Order; and give the last fight a nice touch…like having Bellatrix getting her arse blasted off for one. I’d pay for a good five or so minutes of full-on femDeatheater fury.(sorry, she’s just such a good character. She still has some scraps of her intended personality – an accident, I’m sure) Just give the GOD-DAMNED CHARACTERS SOME FREAKIN’ PERSONALITY!!! They had one you know, but you hid it under some god forsaken rock in the middle of the ocean after the second movie for forgetting to pay you back or some shite like that. I’m sure there are many other points I could make about storyline, scenery, clothing choices and whatnot, but I’m just going to leave saying: Voldie is meant to die, Sirius is dead, Tonks and Remus DO NOT split up – they die, Dumbldore is NOT out playing with the fairies out in the forest – he’s dead kiddies, face it, Bellatrix doesn’t leave her husband for Tom OR Lucius, Draco isn’t gay, Fred is, and will forever remain dead, the Malfoys are sorry for their rash behaviour over the past two or so decades, everybody else counts their losses and moves on. if any of these things don’t happen or are reversed…first of all lol…*fantasy*…, and second…GET THE FUCK OUT OF MY RECORDING STUDIO!!!!!(when did it become yours?) answer – the day you fucked up so badly.
Now understand this – I am a fan, but I am speaking from everybody’s point of view…nobody understands this tripe: get the bloody books, read them, write the script. Nobody will accuse you of breaching copyright – you’re meant to be copying and pasting. We’re not doing a highschool biology assignment anymore. You’re allowed to cheat a little. You’re MEAN’T to cheat A LOT. If the next movie turns out to be another pathetic attempt at turning Harry Potter into Twilight…I will see blood – probably imaginary blood from the fight scene that never was – but blood none-the-less.

  22. Jillian says:

I was so excited for this movie, and went to the midnight showing. I have to say I was very disappointed. I think they put in WAY to many irrelevant scenes. Like the burrow burning down. Really??? That has nothing to do with the book, and didn’t help out the plot in any way. They could have used that time for something way more important that they left out. I have to say I was very impressed with the special affects, but that’s the only good thing I can say for the movie.

  23. CDiggory says:

    weregrrl wrote:

“another pathetic attempt at turning Harry Potter into Twilight”

Nail on head. I also hear Yates has never read the books(!).
Burning the Burrow: stupid and insulting among many other things that have already been said. And they leave without trying to kill Harry?

Bellatrix: “Ha, ha, ha! Gee, I was sure I read the Burrow was hidden from Death Eaters by protective wards. I could kill Potter, while Tonks and Lupin act strangely ineffectual, but the movie’s only halfway over. I’ll burn the house down instead and disapparate with a sexy cackle. Voldemort will be SO impressed when when he hears.”

To those of you suggesting ‘Avada Kadavra’ as a solution, IMHO you’re too kind. The proper curse for these occasions is
    CRUCIO!

And remember…you have to MEAN it.

  24. Old pot head says:

I’m not sure but i read my first Pot head(Harry Potter)book in maybe 9th grade or so and i loved it but when the movies hit i stopped reading the books last i read was the 3rd maybe but i wanted to see what has happen sense movie 1-2, i think, up to in Hogwarts and now I’m sort oh happy i stopped following it from what u guys say its a big let down, and to see Dumbledore die by a guy i knew was a bad person from the first book/movie was just dumb to have him around for “5 more years”

  25. blackswan says:

    Am in total agreement……….
HBP film totally killed this absolutely amazing book..Left me feeling Sad then Angry ..then totally ripped off…I had to read the book again and again to try and remember why I had expected soooooooo much more from this movie…Would have loved to see Dumbledore tell off the dursley’s in the beggining and atleast end the film with his funeral…what a letdown :-(

  26. Zach says:

Watched it with a group of friends and we all had just one comment, “If we wanted to watch a comedy, we would’ve watched Hangover!”

    @Old pot head:

You have no idea what you’re talking about do you?

  27. MacKenzie says:

I hated how they changed alot of things. Nothing made sense. And with all of the relationships and love. That’s bullshit. The creators did that to draw in a young audience. What really makes me mad is how some people who have never read any of the books thinks it was the best Harry Potter movie. I don’t even want to see the next movie. For people who have never read the books, will be thinking ” WTF!?”

  28. DobbyJunior says:

Not to mention Book Snape:’Snape seemed to be in as much pain as the yelping dog inside the burning hut’”You dare use MY own spells against me, Potter?! I AM THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE!!!”*slashes Harry’s cheek with his wand* compared to Movie Snape:”I am the Half-Blood Prince.” *just knocks him to the ground and leaves with the rest. May not be totally accurate because I haven’t watched the movie enough to remember. Such a shame to say that about my favorite series when if it were any other of the movies would be a totally different story.

  29. person says:

Ok first of all, you all need to calm down, and be realistic. Stop saying that you could have made the films better, because that is a blatant lie. Even if you don’t like the changes from the books, the movie was still made well. All the things that make up a good movie were there. Good storyline(i’ll get to that later), good enough acting, good effects, not too long and entertaining.

I’ve noticed that a lot of people hate the inclusion of the destruction of the burrow. I can understand why, as it is not in the book, contributes very little to the story, and brings up some problems for film 7. The fact that is not in the book should not be a big deal. Yes, the books were great. Yes, they are better than the movies. But they are NOT the movies. The scene at the burrow helps to emphasize the fact that Harry is in constant danger. And I think it gets the point across, while remaining entertaining.

Next, the end battle at Hogwarts. While it would have been amazing to see, it will still be in the 7th movie. The film-makers wanted to avoid repetition, and for good reason. Although ok in a series of BOOKS, repetition is bad in MOVIES. THIS IS A MOVIE! The studio DOES want to make money. If they didn’t have money, there would be no movie in the first place, good or bad. It is not bad that they want to make money. And if they want to make money, they have to make the films more commercially appealing to people other than just fans of the books. This means adding some scenes, taking away some scenes and shortening the book into something less than 3 hours long…which is not easy.

I think from the looks of the trailer that the 7th movie will be great. Even if they change some things. Also on a side note, I’ve heard that the 7th might pen with Dumbledores funeral.

And if you don’t like the movies, TOUGH! They can’t please everyone.

  30. TRUE HP FAN says:

Ah FUCK U ALL. YATES IS ONE OF THE BEST DIRECTORS OF THIS SERIES!

Stop whining about cuts and changes and look at the film from a cinematic POV, you stupid PURISTS!!!
